Often called cavities, Dental caries are erosion of the surface of the tooth caused by the combined effects of acids, bacteria, plaque and tartar. Dental caries are common in both adults and children. They occur most often as a result of poor dental hygiene. Dental caries are usually painless at first, but they may become painful if they spread to the nerve or root of a tooth. Left untreated, dental caries can progress to a tooth abscess and tooth loss. Dental Caries are not easy to detect at an early stage with traditional diagnostic tools. However with Laser Detection of Dental Caries it is very easy to prevent the extensive damage to teeth caused due to late detection.
Identifying and preventing caries, cavities or treating them in their early stages will reduce the overall damage to natural teeth. It has become difficult to detect tooth decay because of the use of Fluoride in tooth paste. Caries or cavities are detectable by the normal X ray only when they have progressed and have damaged over 1/3rd of a teeth. However with Laser cavity detection it is very easy to detect and diagnose the caries in a a very early stage. Laser Cavity Detection is a non-invasive method that detects tooth decay that is not visible and would otherwise not be diagnosed by conventional methods.
Laser cavity detection is based on the fact that healthy tooth structure reflects light differently than it does decayed tooth structure. Laser beam or Laser light easily penetrates healthy teeth, where as on light has a tougher time passing through dental cavities.
